As part of this Jihad al-Qaeda members believe attacking US targets is something they should do. Al-Qaeda leaders have in the past declared a holy war – called a Jihad – against the US. The US thinks a group called al-Qaeda is behind the attacks. No-one can say exactly why the attacks were carried out.īut, the way America has got involved in conflicts in regions like the Middle East has made some people very angry, and the hijackers are likely to have been from this group.
